Senior Application Engineer – Freelance – Zurich

Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Application Engineer to join their team in their Zurich office. This role requires a hands-on engineer with strong Python and Azure skills, excellent problem-solving abilities, and experience building scalable backend services in a data-driven environment. Key Responsibilities:
* Understand business requirements and convert them into technical specifications
* Hands-on coding in Python and PySpark
* Oversee the end-to-end application architecture
* Design and build business services that generate financial data from various sources
* Ensure implementation of both functional and non-functional requirements with a high level of test automation
* Coach junior team members and conduct peer reviews
* Coordinate follow-up activities and maintain timely communication with stakeholders
* Apply Agile Scrum and DevOps best practices
* Support operations during quarterly closing cycles

Skills & Experience:
* 8+ years of experience designing and implementing scalable backend applications
* Proficient in Python, PySpark, and SQL
* Strong experience with Azure services including Databricks, Data Factory, and Data Lake
* Experience with relational databases such as Oracle or PostgreSQL
* Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
* Proficiency in test-driven development and modern CI/CD practices
* Strong analytical mindset and commitment to quality and timely delivery
* Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams
* Previous experience in financial, accounting, or reporting systems is a plus
